Satan, is that you?

It's June 6, 2006, and so far, the end of the world has yet to hit the BOB household. If you consider piles of laundry, unfolded clothes, unwashed dishes, dog shit in the backyard, and the massive clutter in the Allstar and the X-Gamer's bedroom catastrophic. Well then, it's hit and it's hit hard.
The Genius was asking me about Jehovah's Witnesses. I guess his new girlfriend is one. I can't say that I know a lot about JW's except that they're the ones who ring your doorbells and pass out their little book, the Watchtower. I looked into it and supposedly they don't celebrate holidays and birthdays. Why? I don't know yet. They're also into predicting the end of the world. I wonder if today is one of those days. Will look into it.
Bad news for the Allstar's peewee baseball team. They lost and will probably be the 8th seed at 7-8. They'll face the undefeated Elks whom they've lost to 3 times. I don't think they'll get by them. Oh well, it's been a great learning experience. Peewee is a far cry from the t-ball and I, as a parent, found it more enjoyable. The coaches have been great. They get on the kids when they're screwing up, but are quick to build the kids up when they do good.
Today was election day, no major candidates in San Mateo; two bond measures though, library bond and the preschool bond. Voted no on the preschool bond. Do people here really need another handout? Will watch the news now and see what happened.
Peace.

Hey man,

I'm a Jehovah's Witness, and wanted to give you the heads up about a few things. The internet has a lot of sites that like to bash us as a "cult" or that we don't believe in Jesus, so I thought I'd give you the inside take on our religion.

HOLIDAYS AND BIRTHDAYS:
Yes, we don't celebrate them--no, it's not because we hate fun.

If you do research about the origins of most Holidays, you will find that many have roots in non-christian tradition. (Read "non-christian" as pagan) Even Christmas. Before the Roman Empire turned into the Holy Roman Empire, Dec. 25th was observed as the birth of the Sun God in Roman Mythology. Or something along those lines. Many scholars also beleive that Jesus was actually born sometime in late September or early October. There's more to it, and I don't want to state things inaccurately since I don't have an encyclopedia in front of me. But you can look it up.

As to birthdays, the only mention of birthday celebrations in the bible are two birthdays. The first was in the story of Joseph in Genesis. It was the Pharaohs birthday. He had a guy killed. The other was in the story of John the Baptist. He was beheaded in the birthday celebration of King Herod, who was obviously not a servant of God. In both these cases, both of the ones celebrating were not worshippers of God, and in both cases, ended in tragedy for someone. So the Bible's take is not exactly positive on the Birthdays. Further research into traditions of birthdays shows pagan origin as well.

We as Jehovah's Witnesses try to aviod doing anything that God might disapprove of. If our research reveals a danger of perhaps doing something that could be rooted in false worship, we avoid it.

As to the notion that Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in Jesus, that is just a bald faced lie. Jesus is our Lord and Savior and all that jazz. We just don't believe that he is God Almighty. We believe he is God's Son, and that he is Divine in Nature, but we believe the Father, who the Hebrew Scriptures refer to as Jehovah, to be the Almighty...the creator...the only one deserving of worship. (First Commandment)

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. I'm not going to convert you. I'll just answer what you ask. That way you can make an informed judgment about us.

Sincerely,

Sean McGee
